What is Wing Chun?
Wing Chun is a martial art originating in China. Wing Chun can be performed bare handed or using various weapons.Wing Chun can be mastered by all individuals, regardless of sex or age.
How Wing Chun originated?
Wing Chun appeared four centuries ago when China was tormented by civil wars, in the age of Manchu dynasty . Masters of various kung fu styles gathered in legendary Shaolin convent with intention to create an efficient fighting style for training of guerilla fighters aiming at deposition of foreign Manchu dynasty.
New fighting style was supposed to embrace all the best elements of “soft” styles (mobility, non resisting to force, using of inner energy, ability to be efficient even in advanced age) and so called “hard” styles (explosiveness, shorter period of learning and training and efficiency in finish), as well as to remove all the shortcomings of both.
Before training of guerilla movement fighters actually began, Manchu government disclosed the conspiracy, killed the monks and burned the convent, only five monks survived. One of survivors was Ng Mui who perfected the style and trained a girl whose name was Yim, and then renamed her Yim Wing Chun (“Wing Chun” means “Eternal Spring” in chinese, which was the name of the hall of Shaolin convent where the style was created). Ever since the style itself is named Wing Chun.
Yim Wing Chun had married and she trained her husband in new fighting style and ever since that style was practised in secrecy and was passed on from generation to generation.
Wing Chun persisted through time and was passed on from generation to generation of the most able pupils, also being modified adapting itself to conditions and requirements of modern fighting.
In early eighties of twentieth century, master William Cheung started public training and popularization of Wing Chun.
Memebers of military and police forces are trained in Wing Chun all over the world.
